Windows only: Free PDF conversion toolPrint2PDF [602 Software via The Download Blog] isn't as click-and-go friendly as a tool like doPDF, but it does offer a serious amount of control over the looks, permissions, and security of your PDFs. 
We've mentioned CutePDF in the past, a tool that offers the same sort of print-to-PDF function, but frankly, doPDF [via NoHeat] just worked for me better than CutePDF off the bat. 


PDF-XChange Viewer [via FreewareGenius] PDF-XChange Viewer's killer feature is the Typewriter editing mode, which lets you overlay text anywhere on a PDF—a feature that's invaluable for filling out forms that aren't actually made to work as PDF forms (we've all been there).

CutePDF [Acro Software] CutePDF Writer is a Windows freeware program that lets you make a PDF (Portable Document Format) file out of any document.

9. Convert files to PDF online

Top 10 PDF tricks, #5: Want to reorder, encrypt, crop, watermark or edit form fields in your PDF? Check out the free PDF Tools utility for Windows, which can do all that and more. Mac users, you should check out PDFLab for similar features.

#4: Acrobat Reader isn't the snappiest application on the block, but it's the most common PDF reader out there. You can speed up Acrobat's startup by bypassing unnecessary application plugins, or you can switch to another PDF reader entirely. We recommend FoxIt Reader for Windows - it's fast and free.

, #1: Mac users can save any document as a PDF using the Print dialog's "PDF" button by default. Windows users can't do this out of the box, butfreeware CutePDF installs a PDF printer which also outputs any document to PDF via the Print dialog.

An alternative to CutePDF is doPDF for Windows. Linux users can also print to PDF file.
